Hey! I'm Hanna. Traditional photography isn't my cup of tea—and I'm guessing it isn't your either.
So let's throw out the rulebook.
I’ve got 8 years of experience with everything from weddings to music videos, a killer eye for artistic detail, and a knack for making you feel at ease in front of the camera—while still striking cinema-worthy poses.
Welcome!
Whether it’s your engagement, elopement, or an editorial photo session, there is nothing more fun than using props during your shoot. I know a lot of photographers recommend shying away from props, but definitely not this gal! Props can benefit your session in so many different ways. One of my favorite ways is that they allow you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Ever wonder what the heck you’re supposed to be doing with your hands? That’s where props come in.
Helping you feel more confident isn’t the only way props can benefit your session. Props can add dimension, help tell a story, set the vibe, add a little humor, and so much more. Not sure what to use for your session? Here is my quick guide to help you pick out the perfect props and just a little more info on why I love them so much.
There are so many different reasons why I love using props and believe they can enhance a photoshoot. But here are a few of my personal top favorite reasons.
First things first, props can make you feel exponentially more confident. We’ve all probably been in front of the camera at some point thinking to ourselves “this is so awkward.” (Just me? *nervous giggle*) But seriously, when you use props during your session you’re not focused just on the camera. Rather, you’re focused on that prop and what you’re doing with it.
Not only do props make you feel more confident, but they are the perfect way to express yourself and add a little bit of your personality to a shoot. If you love books, bring your favorites and incorporate them into your session. Better yet, have your session at a local bookstore or library (if allowed) and use the books and other items there as your props. Anything that has significance and meaning to you is absolutely worthy of being in your photos with you.
Vibe, ambiance, mood, whatever you want to call it, props can help create the exact feelings your looking for. Want a retro-inspired session? Bring some cool 70s style sunnies and mid-calf boots to your session. Want a more ethereal and whimsical essence? Dried flowers and wicker baskets will bring your cottagecore dreams to life.
Another reason I love props so much is that they can help tell your story. Maybe you and your partner want to recreate the day you met for your engagement shoot. Think about all of the little things that contributed to that day. Maybe you met at a coffee shop and now you both love exploring new coffee shops together. Grab your favorite to-go cup from your favorite local shop (or reusable mug) and use that in your session.
By now you understand my love of using props during photo sessions, but when it comes to choosing the props you want to use, it’s definitely not a walk in the park for everyone. Let’s be honest, decisions are hard. If you’re not comfortable picking out your own props, I can help! We can come up with a look or theme you’re going for and I’ll do my best to think of some props that would fit.
Otherwise, here are a few unique examples to get the creative juices flowing:
I have to stop there or the list might just be never ending. There is truly no shortage of unique props you can use for your photoshoot. The key is finding something that fits with your personality, helps you stand out, and enhances the photos overall. I’ve never met a prop I didn’t like. If you want to create a unique photo session, tailored to you (whether it’s elopements or editorial) contact me today and let’s see how we can work together!
